The Connecticut man, 60, who prosecutors did not name in order to protect the victim’s identity, was sentenced to 25 years behind bars in Suffolk County Court on Friday, Jan. 17.
An investigation found that the defendant began abusing the girl, just six years old at the time, shortly after he moved into the family’s Suffolk County home in September 2011, the district attorney’s office said.
The abuse escalated over five years, finally ending in 2016 when the man moved to Connecticut.
In 2021 the victim, then a young adult, confided in her grandmother, who encouraged her to report the abuse to police.
A Suffolk County jury found the defendant guilty of course of sexual conduct, a felony, following a trial in December 2024.
“The defendant’s actions were reprehensible, and the sentence reflects the gravity of the harm done to an innocent child,” said Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney. "Here, the victim bravely came forward years after the abuse for justice and to prevent the abuse of others. It is never too late.”
